A short drive from the Greater Seattle metropolitan area, Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State beckoned to be visited and last weekend I finally managed to get out there for a hike.
There are lots of reasonable day hikes around Mt. Rainier, but choosing the right one even in July can be tricky as some more elevated areas are still snow covered. While the Sunrise area just opened this week, most of the trails up there are still covered in snow and difficult to navigate. Instead, I chose the Longmire area in the south of Mt. Rainier to walk up Rampart Ridge through a wonderful forest, get a view of Mt. Rainier from the top of the ridge and then circle back to Longmire via the Wonderland trail.
It all worked out fine. Time well spent.
